Rini Africa

Until Rini's own campaign photography is ready, this first chapter of the site uses real documentary photographs sourced from Wikimedia Commons under open licences. Credited below, with thanks, along with a note on how we've handled a piece of script heritage.

A handful of pages carry a single word in the script or tonal orthography tied to that fabric's origin, always paired with its Latin gloss, never used as decoration. Each is checked against a citable reference rather than composed by us:

  • هَوْسَا"Hausa," in Ajami, the Arabic-derived script used to write Hausa since roughly the seventeenth century, on the Northern Nigeria and Kano pages.
  • ÀdìrẹThe Yoruba tonal spelling of "adire," on the Adire pages.
  • ꦧꦛꦶꦏ꧀"Bathik" in Javanese script (Aksara Jawa), the language batik takes its name from, on the Batik pages.

None of these carry a single standardised orthography across every regional or scholarly tradition, so we have kept this to words we could verify rather than guess at others, including, deliberately, not attributing Bazin to one specific language, since our own research doesn't support a single origin for it. If you can help us verify more vocabulary correctly, we would welcome it. Get in touch.
